Buffering is what happens when your device plays the picture faster than the data arrives. The stream pauses, the wheel spins, and you miss the goal. The cause is usually somewhere between your router and your screen, which means you can often fix it yourself in a few minutes. Work through these steps in order.

Step 1: Restart everything properly

Switch the TV or streaming device off at the plug, not just to standby. Do the same with your router or modem, wait 30 seconds, then switch it back on. It sounds too simple, but it clears a surprising number of problems.

Step 2: Check who else is online

Is someone downloading a game update, backing up photos or on a video call? Large transfers can take most of your connection. Pause them and see whether the picture settles.

Step 3: Strengthen the signal to the TV

Weak Wi-Fi is one of the most common causes of buffering. Try these, from quickest to most effective:

  • Move the router to an open, central spot, away from cupboards and the floor
  • Switch the device to the 5 GHz band if it is close to the router
  • Connect the TV or box with a network cable
  • Add a mesh unit or powerline adapter for basements and far rooms

Step 4: Free up space on the device

Small devices such as streaming sticks have limited storage and memory. When they are nearly full, apps slow down. Uninstall apps you never use. On an Amazon Fire TV you can clear an app’s cache under Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications, then the app, then Clear cache.

Step 5: Update the device and the app

Older software can struggle with live streams. Check for system updates on your device and app updates in its app store. On a Roku, go to Settings, System, System update.

Step 6: Try a different VPN server

If you use a VPN, a server far away adds delay. Choose one closer to you and test again.

If it only happens at peak times

Buffering that only appears on weekday evenings or during big games often points to a busy connection at those hours. Run a speed test at the TV during the evening and compare it with a daytime result. Send us both and we can look at it with you.

Quick reference

Symptom Most likely cause First thing to try
Buffers on every channel Weak Wi-Fi or busy network Cable or move the router
Only in the evening Peak-time load Evening speed test, pause downloads
Only one channel That stream Message us with the channel name
App slow to open Full device storage Clear cache, remove unused apps
Started after an update Old app version Update the app

What to send us if it continues

Message us on WhatsApp with your device and app, whether it affects every channel or only some, and a speed test taken where the TV is (with the time). With that, we can usually find the cause quickly.
